Leonardo’s Story
Brazil
My grandson Leonardo showed symptoms (jaundice, pale stools, dark urine, irritability, and trouble sleeping) when he was three months old. He received a preliminary diagnosis after seven days in the hospital and a battery of tests. It was only confirmed months later through genetic testing. My daughter suffered a great deal. She had panic attacks while Léo was in the hospital and traumatic stress after the diagnosis. We all suffered.
But I knew I had to be strong so I could help her, even though inside I was desperate. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about what tomorrow will bring and how Léo will be doing. Our hope is that he will be able to get access to the high-cost medication so he can have a better quality of life.
I want people to know that even if a child looks healthy, that doesn’t mean they are well, and that parents need help and support. PFIC has treatment, but access to medication, at least for those of us living in Brazil, is a painful struggle and still far from what it should be.
-Silvana, Leonardo’s grandmother
