Blake’s Story with PFIC 1 & Transplant

Blake was a normal happy baby. His symptoms suddenly arose at 7 months, with extreme jaundice, itch, and sleep problems. One visit to the pediatrician turned into specialist visits and countless blood draws. After 3 months of worry, Blake finally received his PFIC-1 diagnosis at just 10 months old.

The year following diagnosis was busy. He had lots of visits with his hepatologist, who prescribed every available medication to help with itch. Unfortunately, none worked, and Blake was listed for liver transplant in May 2024 at just 2 years old. Blake received the Gift of Life from his deceased donor on July 31, 2024.

While that immediate period was filled with worry and stress, we were extremely thankful and indebted to our donor girl’s family. Fast forward nearly two years, and Blake is a thriving 4 year old who enjoys playing outside with his big brother and twin sister. We are thankful for the PFIC community and Gift of Life Michigan for all the support along the way!
